Steve, this chapter was tricky to follow with the introductions of all the cousins/uncles and the quipped conversation. It comes off as a little clipped. This would be a great place for a reference to Shel Silverstein's "Falling Up" Poem!
I like the end part, where Ike is lying and looking up at the stars. In a way I felt that it was contextually out of place, that the description of Ike's spiritual feelings was a departure from the tone of the narrative. But at the same time I liked the description. Maybe it could be more integrated, like if we are earlier introduced to Ike's sensitive and reflective nature, besides other people saying he's "always off in [his] own little world."
